So I wanted to do kind of, vector drawing like clouds. I found an example of what I would like to see.
So I implemented billboards and compute shaders, and then i messed around with SDF's to try and get this effect. I did end up with things that looked about right, however, SDF's on billboards are less than good when you get close to them and look at them from oblique angles. Clouds don't tend to be 2D, and especially that sucks in a game world where clouds can pass you by. So i went back to thinking.
The effect i was after, actually looks a lot like cell shading. That's a neat technique where instead of soft shading you have hard boundaries between shading. So, I gave it a shot. I basically did a bunch of spheres (actual 3d, like a cloud) surrounding a larger centre sphere. The surrounding ones are all random sized and placement, with a weighting towards the bottom of the larger sphere. This, gives the following effect.
Heck that's awesome, and it also gives me a solid sort of art style to work towards for the rest of things. So I think the next thing is, i want a controllable character that can be navigated around the place. That's gonna be a big goal.
